If you don’t know them already Jesse James is a six-piece soul/punk act, think DEXY’S meets CLASH meets BLINK 182. Lets set the record straight. Jesse James are not ska, they are a horn driven blend of rock, punk and soul that fuse together to spark their trademark sound. This sextet flow on a crest of dynamic guitars and lashing drums that are worked around the charismatic brass section, which are the main force behind the bands appeal.
The band was formed in April 2000, through a drunken turn of events including lumps of black hair gel in North London and a mutual love of The Clash and Dexy’s Midnight Runners, by Ben and DKO.
After 8 months of rehearsals (in between work/school/soap opera watching) and the addition of Punk Emu Farmer and Skateboarding guru Eugene Butcher as their manager, Jesse James played their first show at The Underworld in Camden on December 7th, 2000.
Their first professional recording was the independently released “Shoes EP”, which they toured in support of with Save Ferris and Lightyear. In November 2001 the "Shoes EP" was released on Deck Cheese Records. Jesse James then enlisted a new manager and got some amazing support gigs with Alkaline Trio, 311, Brian Setzer and a full tour with The Pogues and LiT.
Things changed for Jesse James when European hard music channel Kerrang TV got a hold of the video for “Shoes” and put it into rotation. It rose to the third most voted for video on Kerrang and was picked up by MTV2. The bands next tour with Suicide Machines established them as one of UK’s most promising punk act.
In June 2002, they released the “Hotwired EP” and toured incessantly, including dates on the popular UK Reading and Leeds festivals. Golf Records then picked up the band and released Jesse James’ first full length album: “Punk Soul Brother” in October 2002.
In May 2003, the entire band was transplanted to San Francisco for 4 weeks to record their 2nd full length “Mission” at Fat Mike’s Motor Studios, with legendary punk rock producer Ryan Greene (NOFX, NUFAN, Lagwagon, etc.) at the helm. “Mission” was released September 22nd 2003 in the UK on GOLF Records (Snuff, Consumed) and in November 2003 in Canada by Union 2112 (Down By Law, Ann Beretta, Belvedere).
The national tour of Canada with The Planet Smashers was an incredible success and plan to return until then, be sure to check out Jesse James “Mission”! |
