Down By Law is one of the most influential and creative forces in punk rock and this year DBL are back. With a new home in Union 2112, DBL is getting ready to release their first full length original album in 4 years which rocks harder than ever before.
The world of punk rock has seen many changes, notably the influx of new "melodic punk" bands, but DBL and it’s members have been going strong for 12 years. Founding DBL member Dave Smalley started off in 1982 with Boston hardcore band DYS who released “Brotherhood” (1983) and “DYS” (1984) as well as several re-issues. In 1986, Dave went on to sing on the seminal “Can I Say”, for the legendary Dag Nasty. Dave also joined Dag Nasty on “Four on the Floor” and more recently “Minority of One”. Following Dag Nasty, Dave hooked up with All for one year, on "Allroy Sez" and "Allroy for Prez" and an EP called "Just Perfect." Sam Williams, who has been with the band since 1994’s “punkrockacademyfightsong”, has played on some of DBL's best releases over the years, was in Balance and Slap of Reality from Tampa, FL. Sam is currently in the Pseudo Heroes. Los Angeles-based drummer Milo Todesco has years of professional training in various genres of music. Besides his outstanding work on the last DBL cd, he played drums on the first album from Zerodown (with the late, great singer/songwriter Jim Cherry: Strung Out, Pulley). Davies is an original rock and roll punk rebel with a love for the Replacements and the Clash, who played with some key bands in Virginia before finding his home with DBL.
With countless tours all over the world under their belts, 6 full length records, 1 split ,1 Best Of, and with 20 years of punk rock experience courtesy of Dave Smalley, DBL have established a place in the punk rock history books as one of the longest running, most dedicated bands. The upcoming record will take Down By Law back to their roots. In the words of Dave: "this new album will probably please a lot of old-school Down By Law fans. It's probably the closest thing we've done to the energy of "punkrockacademyfightsong" or "All Scratched Up!". There's a lot of fast stuff on this, as welll as the melody and hopefully the lyrics that people expect from this band. Most important, there's a tribute to AC/DC, so that's pretty much all you need right there."
The past 12 years have established DBL as one of the most respected and longstanding bands in punk rock across the globe. They are hardworking musicians who believe in making songs that rock, and songs that matter. The songs combined with the values, work ethics and the sheer power of emotion, assure DBL a place in the hearts of anyone who hears them. |
